State IDR guide

Michigan Independent Dispute Resolution Guide

Responsible agency
Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services
Review date

Michigan is a bifurcated state. Its surprise medical billing law provides a state mechanism for certain nonparticipating-provider payment disputes under regulated coverage.

Plan and jurisdiction considerations

Confirm DIFS jurisdiction, coverage funding, and whether the item or service falls within state protections. ERISA self-funded plans generally require Federal IDR analysis.

Federal fallback

Use Federal IDR for eligible disputes when Michigan law does not determine the amount.

Timing and fees

Michigan arbitration uses state forms, prerequisites, and deadlines. Check the current DIFS provider guidance and fee instructions before submission.

Air ambulance considerations

Air ambulance payment disputes generally proceed through Federal IDR if eligible.
